If you train about twice a week, it takes between 3 and 4 years to get a black belt, although it can take longer.

Your first black belt signifies you are the first level of teacher (1st Dan or Shodan). You can still progress and take further gradings. While training to become a black belt you will be a Kyu (student) grade. These are signified by coloured belts:

  • Novice (beginner): No belt, unless the student has a gi it is then usually white, though it can be red
  • White belt: 6th Kyu
  • Yellow belt: 5th Kyu
  • Green belt: 4th Kyu
  • Blue belt: 3rd Kyu
  • Purple belt: 2nd Kyu
  • Brown belt : 1st Kyu
Training is at a pace suited to the individual, though the BKJJA has guidelines on the amount of tuition required between each grading.
